Cut down on Procrastination: from @studykea (Guest Blog)

In this week’s Guest Blog, we hear from @studykea. She’s a brilliant Study Influencer on Instagram and a new Study Rocket Ambassador. She’s going to tell us her views on how you can cut down on procrastination and boost your motivation when revising for those all-important mocks…

 

Procrastination

Hello all! My name is Katy, known on Instagram and Snapchat as @studykea , and I blog about revising and organisation at school!
Today, the lovely Study Rocket asked me to write a blog on procrastination and methods to beat, and I feel like I’ve really nailed my beat the heat techniques!
To be honest, I procrastinated writing this blog, but I’m pushing through the barriers! And you can too, you know what the biggest secret is to beating procrastination?
It’s you. Yes, you heard me right, it’s you.
Only you can beat the procrastination and get things done, you just need a little help and that’s what I’m here for.

Pomodoro method

First of all, is the Pomodoro method. Now personally, this method doesn’t work for me but if you’re struggling to get started, choose a specific task and work on it for 25 minutes, no breaks, no phones, nothing. Speaking of phones, throw them away.
Get rid of them while you’re working, but not until you’ve finished this article!
After the 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break, and then get back and do another 25 minutes. This method is brilliant for people who get easily distracted by the small things, because you can actually get stuff done!
If you’re struggling to even get started, I recommend picking a task and starting it for five minutes, and keep working on it for as long as you can, this is brilliant for things such as typing up notes or taking textbook notes.

Ditch the phone

 

Is your phone a big distraction but you want to time yourself? No problem, there are plenty of apps to help beat procrastination such as Forest and Flipd where you can actually compete to see who can spend the most time being productive. Obviously, you use the apps when it suits you, not just putting a timer on and not doing any work because that would be a waste of time.

Look after yourself

I know for a lot of you, especially students in year 10 and year 11 nearing mocks and exams that all the revision can seem especially daunting. I feel you guys, I really do. I’m in year 11 and halfway through my first week of mocks, and the pressure is immense but I want you to know you’re not alone.
DO NOT REVISE to the point where you’re making yourself ill. Exams are not everything, and a grade doesn’t not define you! Please be careful and smart with the time you spend revising.
If it gets to the point where you can’t physically revise, stop. Take a walk, meet a friend, watch a film. Grades do not define you!
I have the problem where I push myself too hard to revise every night for hours on end. It’s really not healthy, I know there’s a lot to get done. But you are always the priority, you and your mental health, nothing else.
