Descriptions of Personality and Character

  • Use Ich bin… to say I am…, followed by an adjective describing personality.
  • Some adjectives you may use include: freundlich (friendly), nett (nice), geduldig (patient), faul (lazy), lustig (funny), ernst (serious), schüchtern (shy), klug (smart), dumm (silly/stupid).
  • To mention the characteristics you do not possess, prefix the adjective with nicht, for example, Ich bin nicht schüchtern (I am not shy).

Descriptions of Others

  • Use Er/Sie ist… (He/She is…) to describe someone else.
  • To express the way friends or family members are, use Meine Familie/Freunde sind… (My family/friends are…) followed by the appropriate adjective.

Talking about Relationships

  • Use Ich verstehen mich gut mit… (I get on well with…) to describe positive relationships.
  • Express negative relationships with Ich komme nicht gut mit… aus (I don’t get on well with…).
  • State who you like spending time with using Ich verbringe gern Zeit mit… (I like to spend time with…).

Ask and Respond to Character Questions

  • You can ask someone else’s character by saying, Bist du…? (Are you…?).
  • Respond to the same by using Ja, ich bin… (Yes, I am…) or Nein, ich bin nicht… (No, I am not…).

Talking about Likes & Dislikes

  • Use Ich mag… (I like…) or Ich mag nicht… (I don’t like…) to express your preferences for people or characteristics.
