Part I: Mariam

The novel begins in Herat, Afghanistan, with the story of Mariam, the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy businessman, Jalil, and a former housemaid, Nana.
Mariam is raised by her mother in a kolba (a mud hut) on the outskirts of Herat, after Jalil denies her legitimacy.
Nana tells Mariam about her conception, and instills in her a deep rooteded feeling of worthlessness, defining herself as a `‘harami’** (illegitimate).
