Text comprehension, summarizing, and paraphrasing

Text comprehension, summarizing, and paraphrasing

Text Comprehension

  • Be proficient in the Devanagari script as a first step towards understanding Hindi texts effectively.
  • Develop a strong understanding of Hindi grammar including verb forms, postpositions, prepositions, and conjunctions to improve comprehension.
  • Reading speed plays a significant role in comprehension. Make a habit of reading Hindi texts regularly to increase your reading speed.
  • Understand the context of a sentence or paragraph to comprehend its meaning accurately.
  • Be vigilant of transition words or phrases such as ‘however’, ‘therefore’, ‘in conclusion’, as they provide important clues about the text structure.

Summarising

  • Focus on the main idea of the text while summarising. Strip away the details to determine the key points.
  • Retelling the text in your own words is a great practice for summarising effectively.
  • Use synonyms for words or phrases that seem difficult to understand. This will make summarising easier.
  • Try to condense the information but make sure to retain the synopsis of the text.

Paraphrasing

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the text before attempting to rewrite it in your own words.
  • Change the structure of sentences and the order of ideas while paraphrasing. However, ensure not to change the meaning of the original text.
  • For difficult sections, break them down into smaller parts and paraphrase piece by piece.
  • Do not merely replace words with synonyms. Try to restate the idea in a different way.
  • Make sure that your paraphrase is not too similar to the original text to avoid plagiarism.
  • Regularly compare your paraphrased text with the original one to make sure you haven’t altered the meaning.

Remember, both summarising and paraphrasing will require you to write in your own words, but summarising needs you to condense the main idea, while paraphrasing requires you to rewrite the entire text with changed sentence structure keeping the same meaning intact.
