Types of Employer Organisations

Private sector Organisations

  • Profit-oriented. Main objective is to achieve financial gains.

  • Comprises of sole traders, partnerships, private limited companies (Ltd) and public limited companies (PLC).

  • Sole traders: Owned and managed by one person. Full control but also carries all risks.

  • Partnerships: Two or more individuals share the ownership and management. Shared risk and potential for more resources.

  • Private limited companies (Ltd): Owners have limited liability. Shares cannot be sold to the general public.

  • Public limited companies (PLC): Shares can be sold to the public, increased potential for raising capital.

Public Sector Organisations

  • Owned and managed by the government. Objectives include providing public services and ensuring equality.

  • Includes local authorities, NHS trusts, educational institutions.

  • Local authorities: Provide local services such as waste management, housing, and education.

  • NHS trusts: Medical institutions providing healthcare services.

  • Educational institutions: Schools, colleges and universities providing education and training.

Voluntary Sector Organisations

  • Also known as the third sector, includes charities, community groups and non-governmental organisations.

  • Rely significantly on volunteers and often funded by donations.

  • Charities: Provide assistance for specific causes, rely heavily on donations.

  • Community groups: Formed by individuals of a community to work towards common goals.

  • Non-governmental organisations (NGOs): Operate independently from any form of government.

Co-operatives

  • Owned and operated by their members for mutual benefit.

  • Profits are distributed among members.

  • Each member-shareholder has equal voting rights, promoting a democratic management.
