Oral examination and discussion of the research project
Oral examination and discussion of the research project
Preparing for the Oral Examination
- Understand that the oral discussion includes talk of your research project, as well as spontaneous conversation and questions from the examiner on Italian culture, society, and current affairs.
- Know your research project inside out. Be confident with the central argument, researching process and sources used.
- Practice orally summarising your project. You should be able to give a succinct overview and discuss your main findings with confidence.
During the Exam
- Make sure to answer the examiner’s questions directly. Stayed focused on what’s been asked and tailor your response accordingly.
- The expectation is to engage in an analytical and arguments-backed discussion. Avoid simply regurgitating facts.
- Don’t panic if you don’t know an answer immediately. Take a moment to process the question, and then respond with a logical and thoughtful answer.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand a question. It’s better to ask and answer correctly than to guess and answer incorrectly.
Language Proficiency
- It’s not just about content – your language proficiency is important. Aim to use varied vocabulary, accurate grammar and syntax, and fluent, natural pronunciation.
- Practice incorporating common Italian idioms, expressions, and colloquial language into your responses. This displays a deeper understanding of the language and culture.
- Make sure to use polite and formal language. First impressions matter, and good manners are appreciated by examiners.
The Spontaneous Discussion
- This will cover a wide range of topics, such as Italian society, culture, and current affairs. Keeping up-to-date with news from Italy will be helpful.
- The spontaneous discussion tests your ability to converse naturally in Italian, demonstrating both your spoken fluency and cultural knowledge.
- The examiner is looking for your ability to form logical, well-structured arguments. Back your views with evidence whenever you can.
