Assembly Methods and Sequence

Craft methods: Domestic Sewing

  • Craft methods, also known as domestic sewing, are widely used for the manufacture of one-of-a-kind articles such as made-to-measure garments and quilts.

  • In this method, one person will usually complete one garment from start to finish, sometimes using a domestic sewing machine.

  • The sequence of operations depends heavily on individual preference and style of the garment. However, the general guideline is to progress from top to bottom and inside to outside.

  • An understanding of sewing techniques is crucial, including the ability to stitch in straight line, zigzag stitches, etc.

Industrial Methods: Progressive Bundle System

  • The progressive bundle system is most widely used in industrial garment production where different operators perform different operations.

  • The cut pieces are bundled according to the sewing operation sequence and passed from one operator to another.

  • The sequence in this system typically starts from smaller operations like attaching pocket to larger operations like assembling body parts.

  • Good knowledge of industrial sewing machines and tools like lockstitch, overlock, and cover-stitch machines is fundamental.

Industrial Methods: Unit Production System (UPS)

  • The Unit Production System reduces the amount of handling, increases efficiency and throughput rate.

  • In UPS, the garment components are hung onto the overhead transporter individually and then moved from one operation to another automatically.

  • The sequence in this system is set by a computer which ensures the correct order of operations.

  • Understanding of the automation process in garment manufacturing is crucial in this case.

Undeniably, the quality of the final product depends on how well these assembly methods and sequences are executed. Therefore, mastery of these methods and the correct sequence of operations are of utmost importance in the field of garment manufacturing.
