You will be required to conduct an in-depth study of a particular area from Module 2. This entails a thorough examination and evaluation of the chosen aspect.

Physical Training and Conditioning

  • Basics of physical conditioning: Understand and be able to articulate how physical conditioning forms an integral part of sport.
  • Training methods: Familiarise yourself with different training methods such as interval, continuous, Fartlek, circuit, weight, plyometrics, flexibility and mobility training.
  • Periodization: Understand the implementation of a systematic plan to achieve peak performance at specific times by manipulating stressors of training.

Psychological Factors

  • Goal setting: Understand the concept & importance of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals in sport psychology.
  • Mental imagery and rehearsal: Understand the role of mental strategies in improving performance.
  • Motivation: Understand how motivation impacts performance, and distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

  • Sport and media: Study the relationship between sport and media, and how they can influence each other.
  • Hooliganism: Look into the historical and contemporary issues around hooliganism in sports.
  • Race and ethnicity: Understand the role of race and ethnicity in sports, and the struggles athletes can face.

Motor Skills

  • Learning and performance: Distinguish between the concepts of learning and performance in sports.
  • Stages of learning: Understand the concept of Fitts and Posner’s three stages of learning - cognitive, associative, and autonomous.
  • Motor programme: Investigate the theory of motor programmes and how it’s used in sports.

Anatomy and Physiology

  • Lever systems: Understand the three types of lever systems in the body and their impact on sport and physical activities.
  • Muscular system: Gain knowledge of the different muscle types, their structure, and how they work in relation to physical activities.
  • Cardiovascular system: Understand the components and the functions of the cardiovascular system focusing on the role it plays in exercise.
  • Respiratory system: Get to grips with the role and function of the respiratory system, and how it supports physical performance.
