  • Food security refers to the state where all people at all times have access to enough safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs for an active and healthy life.
  • It involves three key elements: food availability (sufficient quantity of food available consistently), food access (having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods), and food utilisation (appropriate use of food, ensuring maximum nutrition).
  • Global food security is a pressing challenge due to the rapidly increasing human population, changing diets, and various environmental impacts.

Factors Affecting Food Security

  • Rapid population growth: More people means more food is needed. It’s predicted that the world population may reach 9 billion by 2050, significantly increasing food demand.
  • Changes in global diets: As many developing countries become more affluent, their demand for meat and dairy products increases, putting more strain on food production.
  • Climate change: Abnormal weather patterns such as droughts or floods can affect crop yields and livestock production, impacting overall food security.
  • Plant diseases and pests: These can destroy crops and reduce the quantity of food produced. Both native and invasive species can cause such damage.
  • Water scarcity: Freshwater shortage is a major challenge to food production since agriculture consumes approximately 70% of the global freshwater supply.
  • Conflict and political instability: These can hinder food production and distribution, leading to food insecurity in many regions.

Sustainable Solutions for Food Security

  • Sustainable farming practices: Practices like crop rotation, mixed farming, terracing, and agroforestry can preserve soil health and increase yields.
  • Advancements in biotechnology: Genetic modification can help create crop varieties that are pest-resistant, disease-resistant, or drought-tolerant.
  • Improving irrigation: Efficient irrigation systems can lessen the strain on freshwater resources, enabling farming in arid regions.
  • Reduced food waste: Approximately one third of the food produced worldwide ends up as waste. Reducing this can significantly improve food security.
  • Encouraging local food production: Local farming helps reduce dependency on imports, increases food availability, and can also help preserve local biodiversity.

Impact of Food Security on Human Health

  • Undernutrition and malnutrition caused by food insecurity can lead to stunted growth, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to diseases.
  • Food insecurity can also lead to overnutrition and obesity as high-calorie, nutrient-poor food is often cheaper and more accessible.
  • Micronutrient deficiencies, commonly referred to as ‘hidden hunger’, can occur when the consumed food lacks necessary vitamins and minerals. This can lead to serious health conditions like anaemia, night blindness, and scurvy.
  • Maintaining food security is not just about quantity, but also the quality of food essential for promoting good health and reducing disease risks.
