Geometry
Shapes Properties and Calculation
- Understand the types of angles: acute, right, obtuse, reflex.
- Identify and define polygons: triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, and so on.
- Be familiar with the properties of different quadrilaterals: squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapeziums, kites, and rhombuses.
- Calculate a missing angle in a triangle. Always remember: angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees.
- Calculate a missing angle in a quadrilateral. Angles in a quadrilateral add up to 360 degrees.
- Recall and use the formula to find the sum of angles in any polygon.
- Understand the rules of angles around a point, on a straight line, vertically opposite angles and corresponding, alternate and interior angles in parallel lines.
Circle Theorems
- Understand and apply the properties of circles, including circumference, diameter, radius, and area.
- Make sense of and apply the different circle theorems in problem solving: angles at the centre and circumference, cyclic quadrilaterals, alternate segment theorem, and angles in the same segment.
- Use the formula to calculate the circumference and area of a circle.
3D Shapes
- Recognise and know the properties of common 3D shapes: cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, pyramid, prism, and sphere.
- Calculate the volume of 3D shapes with regular cross-sections: prisms (including cylinders) and pyramids (including cones).
- Calculate the volume and surface area of spheres.
- Realise the connection between 2D nets and 3D solids.
Transformations
- Perform and describe transformation operations: reflection, rotation, translation, and enlargement.
- Understand and use vector notation to describe translations.
- Recognise and describe transformations that produce equivalent results.
- Appreciate and prove congruency and similarity in shapes.
Trigonometry
- Use and understand sine, cosine and tangent ratios (SOH CAH TOA) in right-angle triangles.
- Apply trigonometric ratios for problem-solving including angles of elevation and depression.
- Employ the sine and cosine rule for non-right angle triangles.
- Understand and use the area rule for triangles.
Measures and Constructions
- Use and convert between different units of measurement.
- Construct geometrical figures using rulers, compasses, and protractors accurately.
- Understand and use bearings and maps for problem solving.
