Parallel Lines
Understanding Parallel Lines
- Recognise parallel lines as always being the same distance apart and never intersecting.
-
Identify the symbol for parallel lines which is ‘ ’. - Intuit knowledge of how transversal lines cross parallel lines, forming several types of angles.
Co-interior Angles
- Understand that co-interior angles are created on the same side of the transversal.
- Acknowledge that co-interior angles are supplementary, adding up to 180 degrees.
Alternate Angles
- Identify alternate angles as they appear on opposite sides of the transversal and within the parallel lines.
- Realise that these types of angles are equal to each other.
Corresponding Angles
- Understand what corresponding angles are, positioned at the same place but on different parallel lines.
- Know that corresponding angles are equal in measurement.
Triangles and Parallel Lines
- Notice how a transversal crossing two parallel lines can form a triangle.
- Understand the properties related to this triangle: the alternate angle within the triangle will be equal to the opposite exterior angle.
Lines and Shapes
- Recognise how parallel lines appear in various geometric figures like trapezoids and parallelograms.
- Identify the properties of these shapes, such as opposite sides are parallel, and diagonals bisect each other in parallelograms.
- Understand the significance of the base angles of an isosceles trapezoid being equal.
