Leisure and Free-time Activities

  • Understand the vocabulary associated with popular leisure activities in Turkey. Words and phrases to describe hobbies such as reading, cooking, playing sports, travelling and watching films will be useful.

  • The Turkish culture holds certain activities in high regard like teahouses, nargile cafes and folk dances. Familiarise yourself with these cultural leisure activities.

  • Develop competency to describe your free time activities. For instance, not only knowing the word for ‘football,’ but also phrases to express that you enjoy playing or watching football.

  • Gain knowledge of how to talk about activities you do with others, using collective activities words such as ‘we’ and ‘us’. Be able to express concepts like ‘We enjoy watching films together,’ or ‘In our free time, we often go hiking.’

Sport

  • Be proficient with terminology related to sports, including names of sports, verbs associated with playing or watching sports, and phrases used while discussing sports matches.

  • Understand how sport fits within Turkish culture - certain sports like football, basketball and wrestling are particularly popular in Turkey.

  • Familiarise yourself with the major festivals and celebrations in Turkey. These include Bayram (religious festival), Newroz (spring festival), National Sovereignty and Children’s Day etc.

  • Understand the vocabulary and common phrases pertinent to these celebrations, including how to wish someone a happy celebration.

  • Learn about customs and traditions associated with Turkish festivals and celebrations.

  • Be prepared to discuss how these festivities are celebrated in modern times versus traditional ways. This would involve phrases to compare and contrast different customs.

Expressing Opinions about Leisure Activities

  • Build your competency in expressing your preferences and opinions about different leisure activities. Expand your vocabulary with phrases that help in conveying why you prefer one activity over another.

  • Learn to describe how often and with whom you participate in these activities.

  • Be capable at expressing your future plans related to leisure activities. For instance, you might want to discuss what hobbies you would like to try in the future.

  • Understand how to use tense appropriately, so you can discuss past, present and future leisure activities accurately.
