Locations and climates of major tropical biomes

Locations of Major Tropical Biomes

Tropical Rainforest Biome

  • Found mainly around the equator. This includes parts of South and Central America, the Congo Basin in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Tropical Grasslands / Savanna Biome

  • Located in regions close to the equator. This includes parts of Africa (especially East Africa), South America, and Northern Australia.

Tropical Dry Forests / Monsoon Forests

  • Found in South and Central America, Africa, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia.

Climates of Major Tropical Biomes

Tropical Rainforest Biome

  • High temperatures year-round (25-30°C).
  • High rainfall (2000-10000mm annually), distributed evenly throughout the year.
  • High humidity is also a characteristic.

Tropical Grasslands / Savanna Biome

  • Seasonal climate with a wet season (rainy) and a dry season.
  • Temperatures remain high all year (20-30°C), but can dip in the cooler dry season.
  • Annual rainfall ranges from 500-1500mm, however, precipitation is highly seasonal.

Tropical Dry Forest / Monsoon Forests

  • Warm year-round temperatures (20-30°C).
  • This biome experiences a distinct wet and dry season.
  • They receive around 1000-2000mm of rainfall per year, with most falling during the summer monsoon season.

Importance of Understanding Locations and Climates of Major Tropical Biomes

  • Knowing the location of these biomes helps us understand the spread and diversity of global vegetation patterns.
  • Understanding their climates gives us insight into their unique environments, and how they affect, and are affected by, global weather patterns.
  • This understanding is also crucial for effective ecosystem management and conservation.
