Solution of Triangles

  • Sin, Cos, Tan rules: Understand the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangles, and how to use these to find missing sides and angles. These are often abbreviated as SOH-CAH-TOA.

  • Sine rule and cosine rule: Be able to use the sine rule (a/sinA = b/sinB = c/sinC) and cosine rule (c² = a² + b² - 2abcosC) to find missing sides and angles in non-right-angled triangles.

  • Area of Triangle Formula: Know that the area of a triangle can be found using 1/2absinC. Recognise when to use this formula.

  • Ambiguous case of Sine rule: Should be able to identify and solve the ambiguous case of the sine rule: when there are two possible angles that could be applied to a triangle.

  • Using functions inversely: Be able to use the inverse sine, cosine, and tangent functions to find angles when given two sides of a triangle.

  • Radians: Understand the concept of radian measure and be able to convert between degrees and radians. Realise the contexts in which each is appropriate.

  • Bearing Problems: Confident in solving real-world problems involving bearings and navigation, bringing together multiple parts of the trigonometry topic.
