Participating in conversations, discussions, and negotiations

Participating in conversations, discussions, and negotiations

##Structure of Conversation & Negotiation

  • Begin by understanding the purpose of the conversation; whether it is to inform, persuade or negotiate.

  • Always start a conversation with formal or informal greetings, respective of the context.

  • Use open-ended questions to start the discussion effectively, and keep it engaging.

  • Know your subject well. Ensure thorough preparation to speak confidently on the topic.

  • Be mindful of your vocabulary choice. Use appropriate language suited to the context and topic.

##Conversation Timings

  • Be aware of the timing of your responses, trying not to respond too quickly or slowly.

  • Provide thoughtful, detailed responses. Avoid giving one word or short answers, as they do not contribute significantly to the discussion.

  • Be aware of natural pauses in the speech where you can interject your thoughts without disrupting the flow of the conversation.

##Negotiation Skills

  • Understand the key aspect of negotiation - it involves exchange of ideas and reaching a mutually beneficial outcome.

  • Always use respectful language. Maintain an even tone through the course of the discussion.

  • Show empathy towards the other party’s concerns and understand their perspective.

  • Be flexible during the negotiation process. It is essential to make compromises to reach a common ground.

##Use of Language and Phrases

  • Use a variety of complex sentences to demonstrate your language proficiency.

  • Include phrases or traditional sayings to make the conversation more authentic and rich.

  • Be clear, concise, and avoid the use of slang or overly complex phrases that could be misunderstood.

  • Be accustomed to often used phrases in negotiation and discussion like ‘In my perspective’, ‘Could we consider’, ‘I would suggest’ etc.

##Non-verbal Communication

  • Be aware of your body language. Make sure your body language is open and inviting.

  • Utilise effective facial expressions. They can greatly enhance the message you are trying to convey.

  • Use of gestures can enhance how you articulate ideas.

  • Maintain comfortable eye contact to show attentiveness, respect, and confidence.

##Tips for practising

  • Use revision apps or tension-free practice materials to simulate exam conditions.

  • Have a study partner with whom you can practise mock discussion and negotiation sessions.

  • Make use of recordings and videos of spoken Bangla to understand the pronunciation, speech speed and usage of phrases.

  • Practise active listening. This involves not only hearing the words spoken but understanding them in the given context.

With ample preparation and practice, mastering the art of conversation and negotiation in the contexts of an iGCSE Speaking assessment is achievable. Remember to remain confident and respectful throughout the assessment.
