What is an Operating System?
- An operating system (OS) is the most important software that runs on a computer.

- Multi-user OS: A multi-user operating system allows many different users to take advantage of the computer’s resources simultaneously. Unix, VMS and mainframe operating systems, such as MVS, are examples of multi-user operating systems.
Functions of an Operating System
- The operating system serves as an intermediary between the user and the computer hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of programs.
- Task management: The OS manages the system resources to efficiently handle multiple tasks running simultaneously.
- Memory management: The OS oversees the physical and virtual memory of the computer for optimal performance.

- Security: Operating systems also include features to protect the information stored on the system, via password, controlled access to programs and data files, and the application of data encryption.

- Each version of Windows includes a graphical user interface, with a desktop that allows users to view files and folders in windows.
- The most significant feature of Windows is its flexibility and ease of use. It supports most hardware devices on the market today and simplifies the installation process for those devices.
- However, Windows has also been target for most of the virus and malware activities, because of its popularity.

- Most operating systems have some level of built-in security.
- This includes the ability to require users to input a password before they can access the system.
- Further protection can be added by installing anti-virus software.
- Following safe internet practices, such as not downloading suspicious files and keeping systems updated, also helps to protect operating systems.
