Travel and tourism organizations

Public Sector Organizations

  • National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) are organizations that promote their respective country’s tourism on both national and international levels. Examples include Visit Britain, Visit Scotland and Tourism Ireland.

  • Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) focus on promoting a specific region within a country to boost tourism and attract visitors to less-visited areas. For instance, NW England, and Visit East Anglia.

  • Local Authority Tourism Services aim to boost local tourism and support local businesses. They also provide information services for visitors, manage local attractions and events, and enhance public spaces and amenities.

  • National Parks Authorities protect the environment of national parks and promote their responsible use for recreational purposes. In the UK, examples include the Peak District National Park Authority and Snowdonia National Park Authority.

Private Sector Organisations

  • Airlines, hotel chains, and travel agencies make up a significant portion of the private sector in tourism. These for-profit organisations focus on providing travel services, accommodation, and other tourism experiences to generate revenue.

  • Trade organizations and associations, such as ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) and IATA (International Air Transport Association), help to set standards, advocate for industry concerns, and provide support to tourism businesses.

Voluntary Sector Organisations

  • Tourism charities and trusts, such as the National Trust and English Heritage, conserve and manage historical sites and natural landmarks. They enhance visitor experiences and promote education and appreciation of these sites.

  • Tourism cooperative organizations work together to promote and benefit tourism in a certain region or targeted towards a specific group. For instance, the Scottish Independent Hostel association helps promote and support independent hostels across Scotland.

International Tourism Organisations

  • The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is a United Nations specialized agency responsible for promoting responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.

  • The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is a membership association acting as a catalyst for the responsible development of the Asia Pacific travel and tourism industry.

Trade Unions and Professional Associations

  • Trade unions such as Unite and professional associations like The Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT) play an essential role in working conditions, pay and professional development in the industry. They represent the interests of workers and professionals in the travel and tourism industry.
