Implementing

Preparing for Fieldwork

  • Consider if a preparation day could aid in the successful execution of fieldwork.
  • Identify any training or knowledge needed prior to implementation, such as use of equipment, fieldwork methods, or health and safety procedures.
  • Arrange for the collection of all necessary equipment and supplies well in advance of the fieldwork date.

Conducting Fieldwork

  • Follow all protocols or methods identified in the initial plan without deviations.
  • Record all observations, measurements or sample information in a clear and systematic way to facilitate later analysis.
  • Use a field notebook or digital devices to document data gathered during fieldwork.
  • Document any unusual occurrences or complications that arise during the fieldwork. These can provide important insights during data analysis.

Collecting Geological Samples

  • Use appropriate tools for the collection of geological samples; it could be a rock hammer, chisel or spatula depending on the nature of the sample.
  • Place samples in labelled collection bags or containers with details like sample number, location, and date.
  • Take photographs of the sample in its original location and its geological context for further analysis.

Working Safely

  • Always follow all the outlined safety protocols in the field to protect yourself and others.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like helmets, safety goggles, gloves and proper footwear to safeguard against potential risks.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and having a first aid kit available can be vital in case of emergencies.

Reviewing Progress

  • Carry out regular reviews of the progress against the aim and objectives of your investigation.
  • Make necessary adjustments to the plan if there are any significant deviations or unforeseen issues.
  • Maintaining communication with a project supervisor or mentor can provide useful guidance and feedback.
