Citizenship Action - The Actions of Others

Understanding Actions of Others

  • Know the importance of empathy in understanding the actions and viewpoints of others. This can mean appreciating why people may have different beliefs or levels of involvement in their community.
  • Recognise the importance of global citizenship in influencing the actions of people not only in their local communities but also around the world. Issues such as climate change or human rights are global concerns, and what we do locally can have worldwide impacts.
  • Develop knowledge of human rights issues and how they influence the actions of individuals and groups, including governments, non-government organisations and protestors.
  • Understand the range of actions people might take to influence decisions or bring about change, from local volunteering to international advocacy work.

Assessing Influence

  • Explore the role of the media in shaping people’s actions. This includes social media, newspapers, advertising, and television.
  • Understand how public opinion is shaped by factors like economic conditions, political climate, cultural beliefs, and how it in turn can shape actions.
  • Know how to assess the power of influence. For instance, a charismatic leader may have a greater impact on others’ actions than a written report.

Reflecting on Actions

  • Understand how reflection on one’s own actions and their impact can lead to growth and more effective future actions.
  • Be aware of the value of feedback from others as a way of understanding the effectiveness of one’s actions.
