CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

Introduction to CAD

  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the use of computer technology for design and design documentation.
  • CAD software replaces manual drafting with an automated process.
  • CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space; or solids and surfaces in three-dimensional (3D) space.

Benefits of Utilising CAD

  • CAD can be more precise than hand-drawn designs thus, it reduces the chance of human error.
  • It allows for ease of modification. Designs can be refined and altered without the need to start from scratch.
  • The use of CAD can enhance design productivity, as designs can be saved and templates reused.
  • CAD models can be rotated in 3D space offering a realistic visualisation of the final product which allows for better planning and presentation.

Types of CAD: 2D vs 3D

  • 2D CAD is used to create flat drawings of products and structures. Objects created in 2D CAD can be represented as lines, circles, ovals, slots and curves.
  • 3D CAD is used to develop an accurate model of a part or product. It provides a way to explore and manipulate your designs.
  • 3D CAD provides tools that allow for simulation of motion, performing of tolerance analysis and optimisation of designs.

CAD Software Tools

  • Examples of CAD software include AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Rhinoceros.
  • Different CAD software has different capabilities and features, selecting the right one depends on the specific design requirements and preferences.
  • Some tools allow for parametric modelling, where the designs are driven by parameters and constraints, allowing for quick iterations and design changes.

CAD and CAM

  • CAD is often used in conjunction with Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) in the design and manufacturing process.
  • The CAD files can be input into CAM software to control the machinery, creating a streamlined process from design to production.
  • This integration of CAD and CAM (known as CAD/CAM) can greatly improve efficiency and reduce the time to market for new products.
