Voltmeters and Ammeters
Voltmeters and Ammeters
Voltmeters
- Voltmeters are used to measure the potential difference (voltage) across a component in a circuit.
- They are always connected in parallel with the component in question.
- High resistance is a key characteristic of voltmeters, which helps to prevent the metre from significantly altering the current flow through the circuit.
- Remember to set the voltmeter to a range that is higher than the expected potential difference to avoid damaging the device.
Ammeters
- Ammeters serve to measure the current flowing through a circuit.
- They are always connected in series with the component being assessed.
- Low resistance is essential to ammeters to ensure they do not significantly change the current they are measuring.
- Similar to voltmeters, always set the ammeter to a range that is higher than the expected current to prevent causing damage.
