  • Inertia is a property of matter that refers to its resistance to changes in motion.
  • This concept applies to both movement and rest. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest and objects in motion will want to stay in motion.
  • Inertia depends solely on an object’s mass. More massive objects have more inertia and are harder to start or stop moving.

Relation of Inertia with Newton’s First Law

  • Inertia is the central concept in Newton’s First Law of Motion, also known as the Law of Inertia.
  • According to this law, an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted on by an external force.
  • This means that without outside forces, an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion continues moving in the same direction at the same speed.

Practical Examples of Inertia

  • Inertia can help explain why passengers in a car feel a force pushing them backwards when the car starts moving. The passenger’s body, at rest, resists the change in motion.
  • Similarly, if a car suddenly stops, passengers can feel a force pushing them forwards. This happens because their body, in motion, resists the sudden stop.
  • When you shake a branch, the leaves flutter down in a zigzag because the wind resistance (an external force) acts on the leaves’ motion, demonstrating inertia’s role in path alteration.

Implication of Inertia in Safety Measures

  • Inertia is the reason why we use seat belts and air bags in automobiles. In a sudden stop or crash, a human body will continue moving forward due to inertia. Seat belts and air bags provide the necessary opposing force to stop this motion.
  • The concept of inertia is also why athletes like runners or cyclists lean into a turn. By doing this, they add an external force that counteracts their body’s inertia and allows them to turn effectively.
