The Main Components of Computer Systems
Main Components of a Computer System
Input Devices
- Input devices are hardware components used to provide data and control signals to a computer.
- Keyboards and mice are common input devices, where the keyboard allows text entry and the mouse controls the pointer on the screen.
- Scanners can digitise text and images, while microphones can input audio.
- Webcams and digital cameras allow for input of images or video.
Output Devices
- Output devices present data from a computer system after processing.
- A monitor allows viewing of tasks, media, and data on a computer system.
- A printer generates physical copies of digital documents.
- Speakers output audio information, ranging from system notifications to multimedia.
Processors
- The processor, also known as a Central Processing Unit (CPU), is the ‘brain’ of the computer.
- A CPU interprets and performs commands from the computer’s hardware and software.
- Modern computer systems often have multi-core CPUs, which allow for multiple processes to occur simultaneously.
Memory
- Random Access Memory (RAM) is a type of memory that provides space for your computer to read and write data to be accessed by the CPU.
- Data stored in RAM is volatile, meaning it gets erased when the computer is turned off.
Storage Devices
- Storage devices are used to save data persistently so it can be accessed later.
- Hard disk drives (HDD) and Solid State Drives (SSD) are common types of storage devices.
Software Components
- Operating systems (OS) manage the hardware and software resources of the computer.
- Application software allows users to complete tasks, from creating documents to browsing the internet.
- Utility software helps maintain the system, such as antivirus programs or disk cleanup tools.
- Programming software provides tools to develop other software and applications.
