Grooming and exercise

Grooming

  • Grooming is vital for all animals. It helps to remove loose fur and dead skin, prevents matting, and stimulates natural oils in the animal’s skin.
  • Regular grooming allows you to inspect the animal’s skin for any signs of parasites such as ticks or fleas, or any abnormalities like bumps, cuts or spots.
  • Grooming also provides an opportunity to check the animal’s nails, teeth, ears and eyes for any abnormalities or signs of infection.
  • Different species, breeds, and individual animals might require different grooming tools and techniques. Examples include brushes, combs, scissors, and shampoos that are appropriate for the animal’s species, coat type, and skin condition.
  • Always handle animals gently during grooming sessions to make it a positive experience for them. This can also help to build trust and strengthen the bond between the animal and the caregiver.

Exercise

  • Regular exercise is important for an animal’s physical health, weight control, digestive health, and behavioural health.
  • The type, intensity, and duration of exercise required can greatly vary depending on the animal’s species, age, breed, health status and individual needs.
  • Some animals, such as dogs, might require daily walks and playtime for both physical activity and mental stimulation. Others, like guinea pigs, need ample space to move around in their enclosure and toys to keep them occupied.
  • Consider introducing enrichment activities like puzzle toys, agility courses, or interactive play to provide mental stimulation along with physical activity.
  • Always monitor animals during exercise for any signs of discomfort or distress. Make sure the activity is appropriate and safe for the animal and modify as required.

Remember, both grooming and exercise not only contribute to an animal’s physical health but also to its mental well-being. These activities can also contribute towards a stronger bond and trust between the animal and its caregiver. Regular observation during grooming and exercise can further assist in early detection of possible health or behavioural issues. Use these opportunities to assess the animal’s general health and ensure it is getting the appropriate care it needs.
