Calligraphy in Art

Foundations of Calligraphy

  • Understand that calligraphy is an art form based on writing. It is the design and execution of lettering, which can be created using a broad tip instrument, brush, or other writing tools.
  • Recognize that modern calligraphy varies from functional designs and hand-lettered inscriptions to fine-art pieces where the letters may be readable but are more about the art itself.
  • Develop an understanding of different scripts such as Italic, Copperplate, and Gothic. Practice these scripts to become proficient in calligraphy.

Calligraphy Techniques

  • Use of a dip pen or brush to create thick and thin lines depending on the direction of the stroke. This adds depth and dimension to the letters.
  • Familiarise with the nib of the pen, its structure and how to manipulate it to create both fine lines and intense bold strokes.
  • Practice accurate spacing between letters and words. Proper spacing is crucial for the aesthetic value of calligraphic art.

Calligraphy Materials

  • Area familiar with different types of ink, their properties, and how they affect the final look of the script. Know how to choose appropriate ink for your work.
  • Realise the importance of paper quality on the behaviour of ink and nib. Using right paper can prevent ink bleeding and feathering.
  • Recognise the need – for beginners especially – to utilise grid guidelines or paper to assist in creating straight lines and proper letter heights.

Understanding Typography

  • Understand that typography is the art and technique of arranging type. It’s central to the skills of a designer and is about much more than making the words legible.
  • Appreciate how typography has the potential to go beyond merely telling a story – it can also invoke emotion and convey personality.
  • Get a strong understanding of principles such as contrast, scale, balance, and alignment, and how they apply to typography.

Typefaces and Fonts

  • Know the difference between typefaces and fonts. Typeface refers to a group of characters, letters and numbers that share the same design. Font refers to a specific member of a typeface.
  • Gain knowledge of various type categories such as serif, sans-serif, script and decorative and when it’s appropriate to use them.
  • Learn about font choice and pairing. An ill-fitting font can disrupt the harmony of your designs.

Typography Techniques

  • Understand kerning, the process of adjusting the space between characters to achieve a visually pleasing result.
  • Learn about leading, the vertical space between lines of text, and tracking, the horizontal spacing between a range of letters or words.
  • Become familiar with typographic hierarchy. This is a system for organising type that visually distinguishes one piece of text from another and allows the reader to easily find what they are looking for.

Understanding these scripts opens up a whole world of expressive, beautiful, and personal hand lettering, allowing one to highlight important thoughts, signal a change in mood or direction, or add a personal touch.
