Description of Clothes

  • Types of Clothes (衣服类型): Know the vocabulary for various types of clothes such as shirts (恤衫), dresses (连衣裙), trousers (裤子), etc. Be able to describe how they look and the material they are made from.
  • Culture and Traditional Attires (文化和传统服装): Understand the influence of culture on clothing. Be familiar with traditional Chinese clothing, like the qipao (旗袍) and tangzhuang (唐装), and their significance.
  • Appropriate Clothing for Different Situations (不同情况下的合适服装): Be able to talk about what kind of clothing is suitable for different occasions, such as school (学校), parties (派对), weddings (婚礼), or funerals (葬礼).

Clothes Shopping

  • Bargaining and Prices (价格和讨价还价): Be familiar with vocabulary related to prices, bargaining and discount (赊帐,降价和折扣). Understand how to inquire about price (询问价格) and negotiate a discount.
  • Garment Sizes (衣物大小): Know how to ask for different sizes and be able to explain whether something fits or not. Familiarise yourself with the standard sizes used in China as they may be different to what you are used to.
  • Colour and Styles (颜色和样式): Be able to describe clothes in terms of their colour (颜色), style (样式) and pattern (图案).

  • Sustainability and Environment (可持续性和环境): Discuss the impact of the clothing industry on the environment. Understand terms such as ‘fast fashion’ (快时尚) and ‘sustainable fashion’ (可持续时尚).
  • Labour Issues (劳工问题): Consider the working conditions of those in the clothing manufacturing industry. Be familiar with phrases such as ‘sweatshop labour’ (血汗工厂劳动) and ‘fair trade’ (公平贸易).
  • Repairing vs Replacing Clothes (修补与替换衣服): Know how to talk about mending clothes (修衣服) and the environmental benefits of doing so compared to buying new clothing.
