Finding the Way

Directions and Locations

  • Basic Directions (基本方向): Master the vocabulary for basic directions, such as front (前面), back (后面), left (左边), right (右边), up (上), down (下), diagonal (对角线), straight (直行), turn (转弯).

  • Places in a Town (城镇中的地方): Be familiar with the names of places you might need to find, such as the bank (银行), the hospital (医院), the library (图书馆), the supermarket (超市), or the police station (警察局).

  • Distance and Time (距离和时间): Learn vocabulary to describe distance, like close (近), far (远), around (左右), directly (直接), inside (里面), and outside (外面). Also understand phrases for indicating travel time such as soon (马上), late (晚), early (早), and time period (时间段).

Asking for and Giving Directions

  • Asking for Directions (问路): Be comfortable with phrases used to ask for directions, such as “Where is the…?” (……在哪里?), “How do I get to…?” (如何去……?), “Is there a…near here?” (这附近有……吗?).

  • Giving Directions (给路): Know how to give clear directions using phrases such as “Go straight on…” (继续往前走……), “Turn left/right at the…” (在……左/右转), “Take the first/second/third exit…” (从第一/二/三个出口出去……), “It’s on the left/right.” (在左边/右边).

  • Public Transport Directions (公共交通方向): Be able to explain which form of public transport to take, where to board (上车), and where to disembark (下车). Also be familiar with phrases for bus stops (公交站), subway stations (地铁站), and taxi ranks (出租车站).

Understanding Maps

  • Map Reading (看地图): Learn the vocabulary for navigating a map, such as north (北), south (南), east (西), west (东), here (这里), there (那里).

  • Important Landmarks (重要地标): Know the names of key landmarks you might find on a map, like rivers (河), mountains (山), parks (公园), squares (广场), and crossroads (十字路口).

  • Symbols and Legends (符号与图例): Understand common symbols found on maps, such as churches (教堂), museums (博物馆), schools (学校), and hospitals (医院). Understand how to use a map’s legend/key to read it accurately.

Surviving Misdirection

  • Language of Confusion (困惑的语言): Be able to express confusion or being lost using phrases like “I am lost.” (我迷路了), “I don’t know where I am.” (我不知道我在哪里), “I can’t find the…” (我找不到……), “This isn’t the right way.” (这不是正确的方向).

  • Requesting Assistance (请求帮助): Know how to ask for help in these situations using phrases such as “Can you help me?” (你能帮助我吗?), “Can you show me on the map?” (你能在地图上给我指出来吗?), “Can you take me to…?” (你能带我去……吗?).
