Door Installation
Pre-Installation Considerations
-
Measuring the Doorway: Accurate measurements of the height, width, and depth are crucial. Always measure the frame, not the door itself.
-
Select to Install Pre-hung Doors or Slab Doors: Pre-hung doors come with frames, while slab doors require frames to be created.
-
Choose the Right Door Material: Options include wood, metal or composite materials. Selection should be based on cost, durability and aesthetic considerations.
Installation Process
-
Remove the Old Door: Carefully detach any existing door from its hinges. If installing a pre-hung door, the frame should also be removed.
-
Test Fit the New Door: Check the new door in the doorway to confirm it fits and swings correctly.
-
Install the Door: Align and fasten the frame first for pre-hung doors. Use shims to adjust the door level and plumb. For slab doors, hang the door onto the existing frame.
-
Apply Trim and Paint: Install moulding or trim around the door, then paint or finish as desired.
Window Installation
Pre-Installation Considerations
-
Measuring Window Openings: Like doors, window measurements of height, width and depth need to be accurate.
-
Choosing Window Type: From fixed and single-hung to sliding and casement windows, choose based on light needs, ventilation, and aesthetic requirements.
-
Selecting Window Frame Material: Frames can be wood, aluminium or vinyl, each with its different benefits and costs.
Installation Process
-
Remove Old Window: If replacing, remove the old window carefully to prevent damage to the surrounding area.
-
Check and Prepare the Opening: Ensure the area is free of debris and the sill is level.
-
Install the New Window: Secure the new window into the opening, ensuring it is plumb and level.
-
Seal and Finish the Window: Apply caulk and insulation to prevent heat loss, then install trim, and paint or finish as required.
Remember, safety precautions must be taken throughout all stages of door and window installation: use proper personal protection equipment, and always work with a team when handling large, heavy materials.
