Renewable Energy Technologies
Solar Energy
- Solar panels are devices that convert sunlight into electricity. They can be installed on roofs or on the ground where sunlight is abundant.
- Photovoltaic cells (PV) are the components in solar panels that generate electricity when sunlight strikes them.
- Solar water heating uses sunlight to heat water that can be used for showers, laundry, and heating residential and commercial buildings.
Wind Energy
- Wind turbines are devices that convert wind kinetic energy into electrical power. They often have a propeller-like rotor that spins a generator.
- Wind farms are a group of wind turbines in the same location; they range from small scale residential to large scale industrial operations.
Geothermal Energy
- Geothermal systems extract heat from the ground and use it to heat or cool buildings. During the winter, heat pumps extract heat from the ground and distribute it into the building.
- In the summer these systems can cool a building by transferring heat from the building back into the ground.
Hydroelectric Energy
- Hydropower systems generate power by using water moving from higher to lower elevations, typically in dams, to spin turbine generators.
- Pumped-storage hydropower is a type of system that can store energy by using two water reservoirs at different elevations; during times of low demand, excess electricity is used to pump water into the upper reservoir.
Biomass Energy
- Biomass power is the use of organic materials like wood, agricultural crops, or organic waste to generate heat or electricity.
- Biomass can also be converted into biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel, which can replace fossil fuels in transportation.
Benefits of Renewable Energy Technologies
- They produce zero greenhouse emissions after installation and help to minimize the carbon footprint.
- They require lower maintenance than traditional generators.
- They provide energy independence because they’re not dependent on fuel supplies.
- Job creation and economic benefits come from the design, production, and maintenance of renewable energy technology and infrastructure.
By using these technologies, construction professionals can contribute to sustainable development, climate change mitigation and energy Security.
