Understanding Construction Drawings and Detailing

Construction drawings are technical plans and details used to communicate detailed aspects of a construction project.
They are created by architects, engineers and designers, and are essential for accurate construction and successful project completion.
Specifically, these drawings show the layout, elevation, plan, section, detail, and a schedule of components of the building.

A layout drawing is a type of construction drawing that shows the location of the building on the site.
It depicts distances from site boundaries, other structures on site, roads, and any significant features of the site.
Understanding a layout drawing enables proper site planning and management.

An elevation drawing shows the vertical elements of the building, like windows, doors, and the height of different floors.
It is a non-perspective, two-dimensional drawing of the building’s facade.
A plan drawing, on the other hand, is a horizontal view of the building, illustrating the arrangement of rooms, doors, and windows.
It gives a bird’s-eye view of each floor of the building.

Section drawings depict a vertical cut through the building, giving a sliced view of the structure.
It shows the relationship between different floors of the building and helps in understanding the layout of stairs, height and thickness of floors, and other vertical elements.

A schedule of components provides a list of materials, their quantities, and other details that are connected to the elements shown in detail drawings.
