Fractions, percentages and decimals
Understanding Fractions, Percentages and Decimals
- Fractions, percentages, and decimals are all ways to represent a portion of a whole. They can all represent the same values just in different forms.
- A fraction is a way of expressing a number as a ratio of two numbers. For example, “half” can be represented as the fraction 1/2.
- A decimal is another way of representing a fraction, specifically a fraction where the denominator is a power of 10. For example, “half” can be written as the decimal 0.5.
- A percentage is a fraction where the denominator is always 100, expressed with a percent sign (%). For example, “half” can be represented as the percentage 50%.
