Fractions, percentages and decimals

Understanding Fractions, Percentages and Decimals

  • Fractions, percentages, and decimals are all ways to represent a portion of a whole. They can all represent the same values just in different forms.
  • A fraction is a way of expressing a number as a ratio of two numbers. For example, “half” can be represented as the fraction 1/2.
  • A decimal is another way of representing a fraction, specifically a fraction where the denominator is a power of 10. For example, “half” can be written as the decimal 0.5.
  • A percentage is a fraction where the denominator is always 100, expressed with a percent sign (%). For example, “half” can be represented as the percentage 50%.

Conversion Between Fractions, Percentages, and Decimals

  • To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
  • To convert a decimal to a fraction, consider the place value of the decimal and use it as the denominator. Remember to simplify the fraction if possible.
  • To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply it by 100 and add a % sign.
  • To convert a percentage to a decimal, remove the person sign and divide by 100.
  • To convert a fraction to a percentage, first convert the fraction to a decimal then to percentage.
