Layering

Layering is a post-production technique that allows you to combine multiple images, adjustments, or effects on separate layers within one single image.
The use of layers provides flexibility as the changes you make in one layer do not affect others. You can independently edit, hide, reveal, rearrange, or delete layers.
For instance, a layer can be used to add text on top of an image without permanently altering the original image.
Layers can be adjusted for opacity and blending modes. Opacity affects the transparency of the layer, and blending modes determine how the colours of one layer interact with those of layers below.

Masking

Masking is a technique used to hide parts of a layer revealing the content beneath it. It is often used in combination with layers.
A layer mask is a grayscale image, where black areas conceal and white areas reveal the layer content.
The great thing about masks is their non-destructive nature. You can always change your mind and edit the mask without affecting the original layer.
Masks can be particularly helpful when merging images with different exposures, also known as exposure blending, or when isolating and modifying specific parts of an image.

Retouching

Retouching involves altering an image post-production to improve its appearance, typically by removing imperfections or altering colours and tones.
Cloning or healing tools are commonly used in retouching, allowing you to duplicate portions of an image or blend imperfections into surrounding areas.
Dust removal, red-eye reduction and skin smoothing are some examples of retouching techniques.
Retouching requires a careful balance; overdoing can lead to images that look overly processed or unrealistic. The goal should be to enhance the image, not to completely alter reality.
Techniques such as dodge and burn, used to lighten or darken areas of the image, can further enhance depth and contrast.

In mastering these advanced techniques, you can significantly enhance your creative control in producing professional, compelling, and aesthetically brilliant photographs.
