SECTION 1: Basic Weather Vocabulary

  • Learn key nouns to describe the weather such as ‘soleil’ (sun), ‘pluie’ (rain), ‘vent’ (wind) and ‘neige’ (snow)
  • Make sure you know the words for the four seasons: ‘printemps’ (spring), ‘été’ (summer), ‘automne’ (autumn), and ‘hiver’ (winter)
  • Remember words like ‘orage’ (storm), ‘éclair’ (lightning), ‘tonnerre’ (thunder), ‘nuage’ (cloud) and ‘ciel’ (sky)

SECTION 2: Weather-Related Verbs and Expressions

  • Be able to use weather-connected verbs such as ‘pleuvoir’ (to rain), ‘neiger’ (to snow), and ‘briller’ (to shine)
  • Understand common expressions like ‘Il fait beau’ (The weather is nice), ‘Il fait mauvais’ (The weather is bad), ‘Il fait chaud’ (It’s hot) and ‘Il fait froid’ (It’s cold)
  • Also know how to say ‘What’s the weather like?’ which is ‘Quel temps fait-il?’

SECTION 3: Using Weather in Conversation

  • Familiarise yourself with phrases for discussing the weather such as ‘Quelle belle journée!’ (What a beautiful day!) and ‘J’espère qu’il ne pleuvra pas demain’ (I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow)
  • Learn how to talk about previous weather events, for example ‘Il a plu hier’ (It rained yesterday) and “Demain, il fera chaud” (Tomorrow, it will be hot)

SECTION 4: Weather and Daily Life

  • Understand how to link weather to daily activities, like ‘Il fait trop chaud pour jouer au foot’ (It’s too hot to play football) or ‘Nous avons fait un bonhomme de neige quand il a neigé’ (We made a snowman when it snowed).
  • Learn how weather affects feelings and actions with phrases like ‘Le mauvais temps me rend triste’ (Bad weather makes me sad)

Don’t forget to use these words and phrases in varied contexts and continually practice using them in writing, listening and speaking exercises. Make sure you are comfortable manipulating these expressions in different sentences and scenarios.
