Network Hardware

  • Networking hardware, also known as network equipment or computer networking devices, are physical devices which are required for communication and interaction between devices on a computer network.

Routers

  • A router is a hardware device that routes data (hence the name) from a local network to another network.
  • The most common function of a router is to connect a home or business to the Internet.
  • Routers choose the best path for data packets to travel, so they’re received quickly and accurately.
  • Routers can be wired or wireless.

Switches

  • A network switch is a small hardware device that centralises communications among multiple connected devices within one local area network (LAN).
  • Managed switches allow for more customisation and offer features such as Quality of Service (QoS) which allows for priority levels to be assigned to specific types of data.

Network Interface Card (NIC)

  • A Network Interface Card (NIC) is a circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so it can connect to a network.
  • Each NIC has its own unique MAC address that identifies the computer on a network.
  • NICs can be for Ethernet connections, or can be wireless.

Access Points

  • Wireless Access Points (WAPs) allow devices to connect to the network without wires, which extends the range of the network.
  • These are typically used in large spaces like offices or schools.

Hubs

  • A hub is a common connection point for devices in a network and are generally less sophisticated than switches.
  • Data arriving at one port is forwarded to all other ports so that all devices see all data.

Firewalls

  • A firewall supervises and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules.
  • They establish a barrier between internal and external networks which can prevent unwanted access.

Key Points to Remember

  • Routers, switches, NICs, hubs, and firewalls are all examples of network hardware.
  • Each serves a specific purpose within a network to facilitate communication and protect data.
