Installation methods and techniques

Installation Methods and Techniques

  • Site Assessment: Understand the importance of visiting and evaluating the installation site beforehand. Factors to consider include available space, surface suitability, adjacent structures, and location aesthetics.

  • Risk Assessment: This involves identifying potential risks associated with the installation and how to mitigate them. Think about possible obstacles, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, and public safety.

  • Fixing Methods: Familiarise yourself with various fixing methods such as bolting, welding, and riveting. Each method has its unique advantages and requires specific tools and skills from the blacksmith.

  • Measurement and Alignment: Be sure to double-check measurements before installation. Misalignment can greatly affect the functionality and appearance of the artwork or utility item.

  • Leveling: The use of spirit levels, plumb lines, and laser levels is to ensure accurate and level installation.

  • Tools and Equipment: Knowing the right tools for each installation step is crucial. Common tools include a hammer, drill, wrench, and levelling tools.

  • Assembling and De-assembling: Sometimes items are too large or complex to be installed in one piece. Knowing how to safely assemble and de-assemble components at the installation site is key.

  • Safety Measures: Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety guidelines when installing your work. Examples include use of safety footwear, work gloves, and safety helmets.

Post-Installation Procedures

  • Inspection: Once installation is completed, a thorough check is needed to detect any faults or deficiencies.

  • Maintenance Advice: If appropriate, provide the clients with advice on maintaining the installed item such as cleaning methods, potential wear and tear, and when servicing might be necessary.

  • Client Demonstration: Depending on the complexity and function of the item installed, a demonstration or brief tutorial on its usage might be needed.

  • Clean-up: Post-installation, it is important to leave the site as you found it. Clean up any debris or leftover materials and dispose of them properly.

  • Feedback: Encourage clients to provide feedback on the installation process, giving you opportunities for improvement and development.
