Forge and anvil techniques
Forge and anvil techniques
Forge Techniques
Igniting the forge
- Before igniting, ensure the forge is clear of debris and the air supply is connected.
- Scrunch up newspaper or softwood kindling and place it in the centre of the forge, ensuring it is dampened with lighter fluid or propane.
- Light the kindling with a long match or light stick, then slowly introduce a steady air supply.
- Gradually add more substantial fuel such as coal or charcoal until the desired temperature is reached.
Temperature management
- A colour scale is often used to determine the temperature of the metal. Metals will show red colour at about 800°C, and transition to bright yellow at around 1,200°C.
- More air can increase the temperature, while less air will lower the temperature.
- Be aware that too much heat can damage the metal. For example, steel can burn and become brittle at temperatures around 1,400°C.
Heating techniques
- Heat the material evenly for consistent results, moving it around within the forge’s hottest part.
- Smaller pieces will heat up more quickly than larger ones.
- Use a pyrometer to monitor exact temperatures if precise heating is required.
- Never leave a piece unattended in the forge. Failure to monitor could result in damaging the workpiece or the forge itself.
Anvil Techniques
Proper use of the anvil
- The anvil face is used for all general forging, bending, and forming processes.
- The horn of the anvil is useful for bending and shaping purposes.
- The hardy hole and pritchel hole are used for specific tasks like punching holes and cutting.
Hammering techniques
- Keep your elbows close to your body to prevent strain.
- Aim for rhythmic, controlled blows with the hammer rather than sheer force.
- Rotate the workpiece as you hammer to achieve uniform shaping.
Anvil maintenance
- Keep the anvil clean and free from rust to ensure a good work surface.
- Occasionally oil the anvil surface with a light machine oil to keep it in good condition.
- Any chips or damage to the anvil face should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid damaging the workpiece.
Now, you should have a better understanding of the practical techniques related to the forge and the anvil. Remember to always consider safety first when working with these tools. Always wear protective clothing and use the tools and equipment correctly to avoid accidents.
