Power Tools and Their Uses
Drill Press
- A drill press is a stationary power tool equipped with a drill bit for drilling precise holes in metal workpieces.
Bench Grinder
- The bench grinder is used for shaping, deburring, and polishing metal pieces.
- It has two grinding wheels: one for coarse grinding and one for fine grinding.
Angle Grinder
- Angle grinders are handheld power tools used for cutting, grinding, and polishing.
- They can be equipped with various attachments for different tasks.
Power Hammer
- The power hammer is a mechanical forging hammer that uses a non-muscular power source to raise the hammer.
- It is used to shape large pieces of metal quickly.
Welding Machines
- Arc welders produce a weld by generating an electric arc between a metal stick (“electrode”) and the metal workpiece.
- MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welders use a wire welding electrode on a spool to produce a continuous weld.
- TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welders use non-consumable tungsten electrodes to produce the weld.
Bandsaw
- Bandsaws are used for precision cutting of workpieces.
- They have a continuous band of blade that rotates on two wheels.
Pneumatic Tools
- Tools like pneumatic hammers and chisels use compressed air as their power source.
- The pneumatic hammer is faster and less labour intensive than manual chiselling.
Health and Safety Considerations with Power Tools
- Always wear necessary protective gear (i.e., safety glasses, ear protection, and dust masks) when operating power tools.
- Ensure correct setup of the tools and machinery, such as proper blade installments in a bandsaw or the correct electrodes in a welding machine.
- Only use power tools and machinery for their intended purposes.
- Regular maintenance of the tools is necessary to keep them in good working order and safe to use.
- Ensure the work area is neat, clean, and free of clutter or tripping hazards when using power tools.
