Identifying the safety considerations for activity sessions
Identifying the safety considerations for activity sessions
Risk Assessment in Activity Sessions
- A risk assessment should always be carried out before an activity session; it is a systematic process that involves identifying potential hazards and evaluating their risk level.
- Risk assessments should consider factors like the environment, participants’ abilities, weather conditions, and the equipment used.
- Once risks are identified, leaders must formulate and implement strategies to minimise those risks.
Ensuring Participants’ Safety
- Pre-activity checks are vital. Ensure all equipment is in good condition and suitable for the chosen activity.
- Constantly monitor participants’ behaviours and actions during the activity session to react promptly to risky behaviours.
- Ensure activities are suitable for the participants’ abilities, physical condition and age group to prevent injuries.
Environment Safety
- Check the state of the activity area itself, it should be clean, free from broken glass, holes and any other hazards.
- Always keep an eye on the weather conditions when carrying out outdoor activities.
Emergency Procedures
- Every leader should be trained in basic first aid and be aware of the first aid facilities available.
- Understand and ensure the group is aware of the emergency evacuation procedures.
- Leaders must know how and when to contact emergency services, including the location of the nearest telephone (if not carrying a mobile).
Safety Briefings for Participants
- Before starting the activity, a safety briefing should be given, explaining the risks involved, safety measures to be followed, and emergency procedures.
- Participants should be reminded of the importance of warm-up and cool-down exercises to prevent muscle strain and injuries.
