Models of Atomic Structure
Models of Atomic Structure
- The understanding of atomic structure has evolved over time
- The alpha particle scattering experiment by Rutherford indicated that an atom’s mass is concentrated at the nucleus, which is charged
- This experiment led to the rejection of the plum pudding model of atom and established the nuclear model
- Niels Bohr proposed that electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed energy shells, known as the Bohr model, which aligns with observed atomic emission/absorption spectra
- The Bohr model was later refined by including sub-shells within these energy levels.
