Transition Metals: Formation of Coloured Ions

Transition metal ions can be identified by their colour.
Electron transitions in d-orbitals absorb specific wavelengths (colours) of visible light.
The unabsorbed light reflects or transmits, showing as the perceived colour of the ion.
The concentration of coloured ions in a solution can be measured with a device called a colorimeter.
