Types of Paper
-
Tracing paper has a semi-transparent quality that makes it ideal for copying or tracing designs or drawings. It is often used in tech drawing, calligraphy and in crafting.
-
Cartridge paper is a high quality type of paper with a smooth finish. It is typically used for drawings and artwork, and is often quite thick to withstand the action of drawing media.
-
Flyleaf paper is thin and often used for the pages between the hardback cover and the first and last pages in a book.
-
Layout paper is a lightweight, semi-opaque paper often used in designing, especially in the initial sketching phase of a design process where mistakes might be made and need to be hidden.
-
Bleed proof paper is a high quality paper, usually used with ink to prevent it from spreading and ruining the precise lines of a drawing.
Types of Board
-
Corrugated cardboards contain a layer of fluted (wavy) cardboard between two sheets. This gives it rigidity and strength over large areas making it perfect for packaging.
-
Foam core board (or foamboard) is a lightweight material that has a foam core with a card or paper coating. Ideal for model making and mounting work.
-
Solid white board is typically used in high quality packaging, the make-up box industry, and in pharmaceutical packaging due to its clean appearance and durability.
-
Duplex board consists of multiple layers of paper, often with the outer layer being high quality. It’s used for more premium packaging, such as for electronics or high end food products.
-
Greyboard is a thick, dense type of cardboard that is often used for book covers, boxes, and for mounting works of art.
Paper and Board Properties
-
Flexibility determines how easily a material can be bent without cracking or breaking. Thin papers tend to be flexible while boards are typically more rigid.
-
Printability describes how well a material can take and hold a printed design. Cartridge paper and solid white board typically have excellent printability.
-
Weight of paper and board is an important factor to consider based on what purpose they’re going to be used for.
-
Finish denotes the texture of paper or board. It can be smooth or textured and impacts how the final product looks and feels.
-
Recyclability is crucial in the context of today’s sustainable practices. Most types of paper and boards are recyclable, but their ability to be recycled can vary depending upon the treatment of their surfaces.
