Baroque Melody Patterns

Baroque Melody Patterns

Main Characteristics

  • Ornamental - Melodies in the Baroque era were decorated with additional notes.
  • Scalular - Baroque melodies often moved by step (i.e., ascending or descending scales).

Sequences

  • Sequential Patterns - Repetition of a pattern at a higher or lower pitch.
  • Ground Bass - A repeating melody, usually in the bass, which forms the structural basis of the piece.

Performance

  • Improvisation - Musicians were expected to be able to embellish the written music on the spot.
  • Figured Bass - Numeric shorthand used in notation indicating harmonic progressions to the performer.

Vocal Music

  • Recitative - Vocal music that imitates speech (more lyrical than melodic).
  • Aria - A self-contained piece for one voice typically accompanied by orchestra.

Note: Identification of these characteristic patterns is crucial for your understanding and analysis of Baroque music.
