Understanding Health, Fitness and Well-being

  • Health: It is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
  • Fitness: This refers to an individual’s ability to meet the demands of the environment. It is often associated with the ability to perform certain physical tasks or activities without undue fatigue.
  • Well-being: This is a state of being comfortable, healthy or happy. It encompasses physical, mental and emotional factors.

Components of Fitness

  • Cardiovascular endurance: The efficiency with which the body delivers oxygen and nutrients needed for muscular activity and transports waste products from the cells.
  • Muscular strength: The maximum amount of force that a muscle or muscle group can exert against a resistance.
  • Muscular endurance: The ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeat a movement many times or hold a particular position for an extended period of time.
  • Flexibility: The quality of being able to bend easily without breaking. Can also refer to the range of motion in a joint or group of joints.
  • Body composition: The proportion of fat, bone, water and muscle in human bodies.

Benefits of Regular Exercise

  • Improved cardiovascular health with lowered risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.
  • Increased muscular strength and endurance which makes daily tasks easier.
  • Enhanced flexibility which reduces the chance of injuries and improves performance in sports.
  • Better mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Reduces the risk of certain types of cancers and type-2 diabetes.

The Relationship Between Health, Fitness and Well-being

  • Regular exercise can improve your overall health by reducing the risk of chronic diseases, maintaining a healthy weight, promoting better sleep, and improving mental health.
  • Fitness directly affects health and well-being as being fit means you can perform tasks with less effort and fatigue which can lead to a greater sense of well-being.
  • High levels of fitness and good health can help improve our mental well-being by boosting our self-esteem, confidence and creating positive self-image.

The Principle of Training:

  • Progression: Gradually increasing the amount of exercise you do can improve your fitness over time.
  • Overload: Working the body harder than it is normally worked
  • Specificity: Choosing the right types of activities to improve a given element of fitness.
  • Reversibility: Any adaptation that takes place due to training will be reversed if you stop training.
  • Variation: Mixing up your fitness routine in order to prevent your body from getting used to a particular workout.
