The Role of Hormones in Human Behaviour

Endocrine System

  • This system comprises of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.
  • These hormones can influence our mood, metabolism, growth and development.

Oxytocin

  • Often referred to as the ‘love hormone’. It plays a vital role in social bonding, sexual reproduction and during and after childbirth.
  • Oxytocin can also stimulate empathetic responses and improve mood.

Cortisol

  • Known as ‘stress hormone’. It helps the body respond to stress effectively.
  • High levels of cortisol over a prolonged period can lead to anxiety and depression.

Adrenaline

  • It prepares the body for ‘fight or flight’ response. This hormone increases heart rate, blood pressure and boosts energy supplies.

Testosterone

  • Found in both sexes, but men have higher levels. It’s related to aggression, sexual drive, dominance, and physical strength.

Estrogen and Progesterone

  • Primary female hormones, critical in menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause.
  • They have significant effects on mood and are linked to premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
