Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
- In Christian teaching, Heaven is described as a place of perfect beauty, peace and happiness. It’s where believers aspire to spend eternity after death.
- The Bible describes Heaven as a place where there is no suffering, pain or sadness.
-
Believers are taught to aspire to reach Heaven by living a good, faithful life according to God’s teachings and the example of Jesus.
- Hell, on the other hand, is described as a place of punishment and suffering for the wicked and those who reject God’s teachings.
- Some Christian denominations interpret Hell as eternal separation from God.
- The concept of Hell serves as a deterrent for sinful behaviour.
- It is also a place for purgation, where souls are cleansed before they can enter heaven, according to some Christian denominations.
Purgatory
- Purgatory is a belief held by some Christian denominations, particularly the Roman Catholic Church.
- It is considered an intermediate state between earthly life and Heaven where souls undergo purification.
- Souls in purgatory can be helped by the prayers and good deeds of the living.
Judgement
- According to Christian beliefs, after death, individuals will face God’s judgement.
- This judgement will be based on a person’s thoughts, words and deeds during their lifetime.
- Those judged positively by God will gain entry to Heaven, while those judged negatively will be condemned to Hell.
Resurrection
- The concept of the resurrection of the body helps to underpin the Christian beliefs about Heaven, Hell, and Judgement.
- This belief refers to the idea that, at the end of the world, people will be raised from the dead and their souls will be reunited with their bodies.
- The belief in resurrection is drawn primarily from Jesus’ resurrection as recorded in the New Testament of the Bible.
