Jesus Christ

Life and Ministry of Jesus Christ

  • Jesus of Nazareth, commonly known as Jesus Christ, is considered the central figure of Christianity. Believed to be the Son of God and the Messiah (Christ) prophesied in the Old Testament.

  • According to the New Testament, Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. His birth is celebrated annually on Christmas.

  • Jesus’ teachings, parables, and miracles are recorded in the New Testament. Notable events include the Sermon on the Mount and miracles like turning water into wine, healing the sick, and raising the dead.

  • Jesus taught about love, forgiveness, and the kingdom of God. He summarised all the commandments of God into two key commandments: Love God and love your neighbours.

The Death and Resurrection of Jesus

  • Jesus was crucified by the Romans, an event commemorated on Good Friday. Christians believe that Jesus died for the sins of humanity, a concept known as atonement.

  • Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. This event is celebrated on Easter Sunday and signifies victory over sin and death.

  • The Ascension of Jesus is the Christian belief that Christ ascended into heaven, observed on Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter.

The Divine Nature of Jesus

  • Jesus is believed to be the Son of God, part of the Trinity that includes God the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.

  • Jesus is viewed as fully human and fully divine. This is known as the doctrine of Incarnation.

  • Jesus’s divine nature is demonstrated through his miracles, fulfilment of prophecies, his resurrection and ascension into heaven.

Jesus in Christian Beliefs and Practices

  • Jesus is seen as a model for living a good, moral life - an example of how to act with love and kindness towards others.

  • His teachings form the basis of Christian ethics and morality, including love, forgiveness, humility, and justice.

  • Christians remember Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection through rites such as Baptism and the Eucharist (Communion). In these, they believe they share in Jesus’s death and resurrection.

Remember: Different Christian denominations may interpret aspects of Jesus’s life and teachings slightly differently but these are the core beliefs most hold in common.
