Understanding Structure in Whole Texts

Text structure refers to how information is organised within a text. It influences the readability, clarity and impact of the text on its reader.
Identification of text structure is essential in comprehending the main ideas and author’s intent.
Text structure could vary from linear (chronological), to cyclical, or non-linear where a story may circle around a series of flashbacks or multiple viewpoints.
Chronological structure is found in narratives most often and simply follows the order of events as they happened in time.

Pay attention to the sequence of information or events in the text, as this will give you insights into the structural framework used by the writer.
Identify the use of any flashbacks or flash-forwards which disturb the normal chronological progression, and ponder on their significance in the narrative.
