Momentum is conserved because the rifle travels in the opposite direction to the bullet. Recalling that velocity is a vector quantity and therefore the direction is included. One direction is a positive direction whilst the other is negative. This will allow for a ‘positive’ momentum and a ‘negative’ momentum - meaning that they are travelling in opposite directions.

The values of the momentums will be zero.
