Introduction

Set in 17th century Boston, The Scarlet Letter is a story of sin, punishment, and redemption in a Puritan society.

Hester’s Public Humiliation

Hester Prynne, a young woman, emerges from the town’s jail carrying an infant - her child named Pearl, born out of wedlock, and a scarlet letter ‘A’ on her dress symbolising her sin of adultery.
She refuses to reveal the father of her child and accepts the punishment - to wear the scarlet letter ‘A’ for the rest of her life.

Hester’s Husband and Pearl’s Father

Hester’s husband, who had sent her to America and stayed back in England, arrives in the colony and adopts the alias Roger Chillingworth.
He vows to identify and seek revenge on Pearl’s father.

The Secret Sinner

Hester’s lover is revealed to be Arthur Dimmesdale, the town’s much-admired minister.
Dimmesdale struggles with his secret sin of being Pearl’s father, causing a decline in his physical health.

Chillingworth’s Revenge

Chillingworth moves in with Dimmesdale, pretending to be his physician.
He eventually uncovers Dimmesdale’s secret, leading to further mental and physical deterioration of the minister.

Confession and Redemption

Hester and Dimmesdale plan to escape to Europe to live as a family with Pearl.
Before they can do so, Dimmesdale confesses his sin to the community on the scaffold and dies in Hester’s arms.
Chillingworth, bereft of his object of revenge, dies within a year.

The Aftermath

Hester and Pearl leave Boston. Many years later, Hester returns alone, wearing the scarlet letter, and continues to help the poor in the community.
After Hester’s death, she is buried alongside Dimmesdale, with the scarlet letter inscribed on their shared tombstone.
