Basic Vocabulary

  • Makanan means “food”
  • Minuman stands for “drink”
  • Air is “water”
  • Teh translates to “tea”, and kopi is “coffee”
  • Nasi is “rice”, a staple food in Indonesia
  • Use gula for “sugar”, and garam for “salt”

Specific Food and Drink

  • Nasi goreng means “fried rice”
  • Mie goreng stands for “fried noodles”
  • Soto is a type of Indonesian soup
  • Satay or sate is skewered and grilled meat
  • Tahu and tempe are made from soybeans, similar to tofu
  • Bir is “beer”, and anggur is “wine”

Eating and Drinking
