Basic Vocabulary

• Makanan means “food”
• Minuman stands for “drink”
• Air is “water”
• Teh translates to “tea”, and kopi is “coffee”
• Nasi is “rice”, a staple food in Indonesia
• Use gula for “sugar”, and garam for “salt”

Specific Food and Drink

• Nasi goreng means “fried rice”
• Mie goreng stands for “fried noodles”
• Soto is a type of Indonesian soup
• Satay or sate is skewered and grilled meat
• Tahu and tempe are made from soybeans, similar to tofu
• Bir is “beer”, and anggur is “wine”

Eating and Drinking

• Makan means “to eat”
• Minum translates to “to drink”
• Saya mau makan… for “I want to eat…”
• Saya mau minum… for “I want to drink…”

Food Preferences

• To express liking for certain foods, use Saya suka… for “I like…”
• To indicate dislike, use Saya tidak suka… for “I do not like…”
• If you want to know whether someone likes a certain food or drink, ask Kamu suka…? for “Do you like…?”
